Participant Information Sheet
Invitation and Purpose
We are inviting you to take part in research to understand the experiences of young people who are currently Children Missing Education (CME), Elective Home Educated (EHE) or Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). As part of the study, we would like to find out:
- What are the barriers to in-person education and how can young people be supported to remain in or re-enter in-person education or training?
- What support or interventions are needed to overcome these barriers?
- What are their careers goals or aspirations, and is any supported it needed to raise these?
We would like to conduct up to 10 – 15 semi-structured interviews across the four local authority areas. We want to talk to both young people and their parents/carers about their experiences of:
- Education in mainstream or alternative provision and home education
- Other support they are currently receiving from community organisations, social services etc
- Experiences of their local area, family background and other environmental factors
- Life aspirations and career goals
- What other support would be helpful in returning to education and accessing services
Young people and parents/carers have a choice to be interviewed together or separately, whichever is most appropriate and comfortable for them. Where the child concerned is aged 9 or under, we want to talk to the parent/carer only. This is to avoid unnecessary stress for the child.
The study is being conducted by Humber Learning Consortium (HLC) on behalf of the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership (Humber VPP). Please read the following information carefully before you decide whether or not to take part.
Legal Basis for Research Studies
Humber Learning Consortium undertakes research as part of its function for the community. Data protection allows us to use personal data (what you say during the interview) for research with appropriate safeguards in place under the legal basis of public tasks that are in the public interest.
We also use the legal basis of consent. We are asking for your consent to audio record the interview.
HLC ensures that research participants are treated appropriately and fairly, and their rights are respected. More information about HLC’s Data Protection Policy can be found at: https://www.hlc-vol.org/about-us/gdpr/
Why have I been asked to participate?
You have been approached about this study because you are either
- a young person aged 10-17, living in the Humberside area, who is not receiving education in-person at a school and is not in employment or training.
- The parent/carer of a young person who is of compulsory school age, living in the Humberside Area, and who is not receiving education in-person at a school, is not in employment or training.
Do I have to take part?
Taking part in this research is voluntary. If you do not want to take part, you do not have to give any reason. If you change your mind after taking part, you should contact Norman Richards on 01482 327438 or norman.richards@hlc-vol.org up to 14 days after the interview date. If you withdraw after this point your data may be retained as part of the study.
What will taking part involve?
Interviews will take between 30 – 60 minutes and will take place at a local community venue. If you prefer, interviews can take place over Zoom or Teams. We will ask you about your experiences of school, your home life and neighbourhood and aspirations and career goals.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There may be some points of discussion that you find difficult or triggering. You will not be under any pressure to answer questions or talk about topics that you prefer not to discuss, and you can choose to halt or withdraw from the interview at any point.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no direct benefits to you of taking part. The information you provide will be used by the Humber VPP in their Strategic Needs Assessment. This will inform policy and decision making in the Humber VPP, and the interventions they make with the aim of reducing violence throughout the region.
How will my confidentiality be protected?
With your consent we would like to audio record the interview using a password protected recorder. This allows us to accurately reflect what was said. The speech from the recording will be transcribed (written out), with any names or other identifying information removed. Any quotes that we use will be given a pseudonym (fake name).
Confidentiality will only be broken in circumstances where the researcher is concerned that there is a risk of harm to you or someone else. In this instance the researcher has a statutory obligation to report this information to the relevant agency that can provide assistance.
What will happen to my data during the study and once the study is over?
HLC will be responsible for all of the data during the study and when it is over. HLC will have access to this data, which will be held on HLC’s secure data storage (Microsoft SharePoint 365). HLC’s data management protocols are consistent with GDPR legislation.
Data (the anonymised transcripts) from this study may be retained by HLC for up to 10 years after the study has finished. The only personal data we keep will be your signed consent form. We have to keep this for 10 years from the end of the project so we will keep it separately in a secure file for this length of time.
Data (transcripts) may be shared with the Humber VPP, through HLC’s secure file storage and will not be shared outside of the research group.
How will the data be used?
We will use data from your interview to write a report – which will be publicly available on the Humber VPP’s website – as well as presentations, further research and to inform funding bids. If you are interested, copies of the report will be available on request from HLC.
