Traineeship Case Studies

Ellie–Mae (17) Hull

It was always a dream of Ellie’s to one day become a nurse following caring for her Grandma whilst at school. With help from one of HLC’s Traineeship programmes, Athena Aspire, that dream is now becoming a reality.

After a rough time at both school and college, where Ellie suffered with constant bullying and lack of support with her Dyslexia, her mum suggested volunteering with the NHS. Following this she was recommended to apply for a Traineeship. This allowed her to gain some more work experience on a hospital ward and to build her confidence and self-esteem, through one-to-one support from a key worker. She also completed her level 3 English and level 4 Maths.

Ellie’s enthusiasm and quick learning, whilst working with the elderly at Hull Royal Infirmary, was soon recognised, and she was nominated by the NHS for the ‘Young Health Championship.’

Through Athena Aspire Ellie has done nothing but thrive from their personal support, reassurance, encouragement, flexible learning and social activities. She is now utilising her health and social care qualifications from college in her new, full-time role as a healthcare assistant at a General Practice in Hull.

“This has been a once in a lifetime opportunity! The support I have received has been excellent. I am loving my new role working as health care assistant. I feel like a completely different person now and I have a clear idea of my future. The encouragement my key worker Laura has given me has made me believe in myself, I cannot thank them enough. I would recommend anyone like me to just go for it!” Said Ellie.

Luke (21) Hull

Luke heard about Traineeships with Athena Aspire through the Sure Trust, after a period of unemployment and completing a variety of post-16 programmes.

Through his provider he has been able to focus his learning and gain work experience in catering. He has completed a range catering and food hygiene courses and achieved just under 3-months work experience, by working three days a week at the Inspire Café in Hull. Putting his newly found skills into practise. Plus, alongside this he has been able to improve his English and Maths.

He has also had the opportunity to work at some of the Hull City of Culture events during the summer, supporting large hospitality and catering teams.

From this, he has now been successful in gaining employment at one of the city’s most exclusive new hotels,’ The Hilton,’ where he will begin his new role this November.

Luke said:

“The support I have received over the last four months has been brilliant! They have really helped me to better myself, gain more qualifications and to secure employment in my chosen field.”

Sky (23) Hull

“The best thing about doing my Traineeship is that they have catered for what I want to do! It has really worked out well. They have tailored a package just for me, what I am interested in and where I want to go…”

During her time on the Traineeship Sky has really begun to believe in herself. Through one-to-one support she has received help to brush up on her interview techniques, job searching and completing applications.

Her goal is to secure a Business Administration Apprenticeship or find work as a receptionist.

To help her achieve this, Athena Aspire have also taken her on within their own offices, to allow her to acquire as much office experience as possible. Whilst at the same time, improving her English and Maths to progress onto a level 1, after successfully completing all the entry level qualifications.

She has gained lots of experience of minute-taking and reception work, and she has improved her computer skills by using a variety of Microsoft tools to prepare presentations and to put together information packs. She has also taken the lead role of managing and collating a jobs board for the organisation, which is used by all the young people to make it easier for them to research local job advertisements.

“I am much more confident person now. I have gained the skills I need for the administration roles I would like and I feel ready for work. Anyone interested in a Traineeship should just go for it!” Said Sky.
