New guides to LSIS services 2009-10 published

LSIS has marked its recent first birthday with the publication of three new guides to the services it offers learning and skills sector providers and its workforce. They are part of a suite of guides which provide information and guidance for particular parts of the learning and skills sector.

Visit the web site to download Guides to LSIS Services.

The Learning and Skills Improvement Service's (LSIS) Teaching and Learning Programme aims to support providers to improve the quality of teaching and learning by linking organisational strategies for quality improvement, continuing professional development (CPD) and the Subject Learning Coach model. The emphasis is on helping the sector help itself, knowledge transfer and building on what is already there.

Resources include:

  • Gold dust: Resources for teacher educators
  • Supporting learner progression: Exploring progression
  • Listening to learners: Managers' guide to learner representation
  • Customer care
  • Supporting your CPD tool

These resources will be distributed through a variety of routes including:

  • this summer's subject coaching networks
  • directly to providers in scope
  • downloading from LSIS's Excellence Gateway www.excellencegateway.org.uk

These resources will benefit teachers, tutors and trainers in the learning and skills sector who work with a wide range of learners - in work-based learning, in adult learning, in colleges, in prisons, in voluntary and community organisations and in the workplace. These resources were developed in consultation with them and their learners as well as other subject and national experts. The resources have also been designed to support the aims of the Institute for Learning (IFL) and the requirements for Professional Formation. As the professional body for teachers, trainers and assessors across the learning and skills sector, IFL's key priority is to support individual teachers' and trainers' learning so that they can maintain their high professional status and have long-term CPD interests as career teachers.

LSIS - eCPD Online Learning Space (OLS)

The new eCPD Programme's Online learning space (OLS) is a growing community of practice. It is being developed on behalf of LSIS with representatives from the whole FE system to enable practitioners to make effective use of technology to support and enhance learning.

Register now at http://ecpd.bdplearning.com to access the following:

  • A new interactive eCPD framework and an associated planning tool designed to mirror the structure of IfL's REFLECT tool to ensure that eCPD activities can be easily transferred and logged as evidence of users' 30 hours or pro-rata CPD.
  • Discussion forums where users can share comments and ideas, and conduct peer-to-peer review of activities and experiences.
  • A growing library of resources and case studies provided by practitioners across the country.
  • Videos, podcasts and articles on the latest developments in e-learning.

"There are some great links on the OLS - I found an excellent resource on 3D virtual academies and the action plans are well worth visiting." Theresa Rowland, Professional Development Adviser (PDA), Hull Adult Education and Hull Training.

"The great thing about the networking capabilities of the OLS is that it breaks down barriers between work based learning providers, FE colleges, prisons and other providers." Craig Marshall, MD, Devon and Cornwall Training Provider Network.

"The OLS really does belong to the community it serves. It's not just another website." Marianne Green, Head of ICT Developments at St Helens College.
