E-Guides
Last updated 3 September 2009
What is e-Learning? It is not just computer or internet based training. Anyone using technology to support learning in any form is applying e-learning. This can be classroom based learning with an interactive whiteboard, use of digital projectors for presentations or web based forums (managed learning environments) to support classroom based learning. Wherever technology is used in a learning environment, e-learning is the end result.
The E-Guides programme supports the adult and community learning (ACL) sector in developing and increasing the use of e-learning across the curriculum. It is funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and developed by NIACE with partners from the National Learning Network partnership.
The most common area of need identified during development was awareness of the technology available and the range of e-learning material that could be used in an adult learning environment.
The materials developed, primarily for the e-guide training programme were found to be a very highly valued resource. The materials have been of benefit within organisations in supporting staff in the use of e-learning, or to those developing sessions enhanced by e-learning as well as to practitioners in their own teaching and professional development. You can download these resources from the links in the left column. (Follow this link to find resources developed by other learning organisations.)
NIACE Online
The Online Course Delivery project aims to address the need for the development of online learning within adult and community learning and the wider post-16 education sector. For further information visit the NIACE Online page of our web site.
LSIS Skills for Life Core Curriculum tool
The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) has launched a free Skills for Life (SfL) interactive tool for all trainers and teachers who support adult learners. Available exclusively on the Excellence Gateway, the revised Core Curriculum is now online and will provide vital guidance to practitioners at the click of a mouse, giving instant access to adult literacy, language and numeracy resources.
The interactive online tool:
- Promotes flexible and creative use of the curriculum content in a variety of learning contexts, including embedded learning
- Enhances content and resources with additional guidance, exemplification and vocational material
- Provides tools and features that will enable practitioners, including the wider embedded-learning audience, to create effective personal learning experiences
- Provides an online community where ideas and innovation can be shared and developed
As this is an interactive tool you will need to log in to the Excellence Gateway first.
Don't have login details? Then register on the Excellence Gateway .
An extensive review of the Core Curriculum over the past two years, based on consultation with providers, practitioners and stakeholders, showed strong support for the existing Core Curriculum, but identified a need to update the material, making it accessible to all. Now a number of enhancements to the adult literacy, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), numeracy curriculum and pre-entry curriculum framework open up the teaching of SfL to all practitioners.
The new and improved curriculum site represents a significant step by LSIS to enhance the quality of teaching and learning and to increase success rates by embedding SfL into all teaching areas. Government ministers have set a target that by 2020, 95 per cent of adults of working age will have the skills in literacy, language and numeracy that they need for daily life. The revision of the curriculum is an important step towards ensuring that the sector meets this target.
NIACE have developed the staff development e-learning centre (SDELC). This web site provides information and activities to develop staff awareness and knowledge to support the integration of e-learning within your organisation. Designed for staff working with post-16 education the materials are divided in to modules of study for managers, tutors or support staff. You can also choose your own course of study.

The programme forms part of the Teaching and Learning Programme (TLP) of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS).
This programme is a thorough introduction to e-learning and the skills required to use technology effectively in teaching and learning in post-16 education. It is aligned with the National Teaching and Learning Change Programme (NLTCP) delivered by the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA).
Who can be an E-Guide?
