and

Crime Concern, a national charity working to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime, working with with disadvantaged children and young people, their parents, friends and families and adult offenders to offer sustainable opportunities through education, training and employment, joined together on 1st July 2008 to form a major new charity and is now known as "Rainer Crime Concern" until the formal launch of its new vision, mission, objectives and name towards the end of the year.

Its combined mission will be to promote opportunities for the development, education and support of young people in need to lead purposeful, stable and fulfilled lives and to create safer, inclusive, crime-free communities for the benefit of the public. The new charity will reach some 34,000 young people in more than 150 communities across the country.

Locally, on the South Bank, Rainer Humberside have achieved the Matrix Excellence Award and have services based in Grimsby and Scunthorpe aiming to support people to enter Education, Training or Employment.

Our service users often come from chaotic lifestyles and are a hard-to-engage group and by using Activ8, funded by HLC, this gives them the opportunity to experience activities outside their local area to develop confidence, motivation, teamwork, raising self-esteem and explore other interests.

Activ8 learners have engaged in activities such as Outdoor Pursuits, High Ropes, Paintballing, Orienteering at Dalby Forest, Historical visits to Eden Camp, Fishing Heritage Centre, Railway Museum and learners have been involved in capturing their learning experience by processing and printing photographic calendars and pictures.

Learner comments

"I enjoyed the teamwork with everyone who went. Being able to see how much I could push myself and sticking to it and not giving in." - High Ropes

"I can climb 40ft trees" - High Ropes

"I enjoyed mixing with people who were interested in the same things as me" - Eden Camp

"I've seen some things up close the I've only seen on TV and books" - Eden Camp

"I enjoyed facing challenges and solving problems" - Outdoor Pursuits

"Trying something new is good" - Outdoor Pursuits and Paintball

"I enjoyed looking round the trawler and learned how they catch fish and tie knots" - Fishing Heritage

Wendy Andrew, Service Co-ordinator says "I cannot bottle the euphoria that these activities generate, I wish I could. To watch learners develop during the day is priceless and when in the office, it is wonderful to hear the enthusiasm in their discussion and feedback on their photographs which are on display and are used as an excellent marketing tool for future activities."

Project workers, Helen, Trish and Yvonne, who, by participating in activities alongside learners, confirm that the skills gained by learners are utilised and transferred into everyday situations e.g. learners that have previously lacked confidence are now integrating with other learners and are empowering themselves to apply for jobs.

Activ8 is a positive experience that helps learners with their confidence and motivation to work towards their ETE aspirations and goals and, to date 36% of Activ8 learners have progressed into employment/education/training.
