Celebration of Learning 2008 Awards

HLC hosted its Annual Celebration of Learning event at the Octagon Centre Hull on Wednesday 12th November 2008. The day was a great success and very well supported.

The centrepiece of the day was our new Community Learning Awards. 9 different awards were presented on the day by Margaret Coleman, Chief Executive of Yorkshire & the Humber Learning and Skills Council. Click on the links for photographs of the winners and those nominees who attended:

Provider of the Year
Outstanding Contribution to Learning
Learner of the Year
Most Improved Learner
Tutor of the Year
Return to Learning
Supporting Learning
Young Achiever
Overcoming Barriers

In addition there was a special Lifetime Achievement Award.

In her key-note speech, Helen Groves, HLC Chief Executive highlighted how the new ESF Co-finance contracts will enable HLC and partners to make an even greater contribution to community-based learning in the sub-region.

This event is planned as an annual celebration and, over the coming months running up to our next event, you should be thinking about nominations for the next round. This applies equally to providers / tutors / support workers and learners, who can nominate their tutor / provider / support worker for awards.

An integral element of the improvements made by HLC was its new website which was launched at the event. The new website is a significant departure from the old one and features, amongst other things access to a virtual learning environment (yawn) ...... OK, a social networking facility for providers to help them support their learners and tutors. This also means that learners can use it to communicate with each other and share experiences, knowledge and skills. It is planned, over the coming months, to pilot this facility with one or two of our partners.

An extensive review of the event written by our Chief Executive, Helen Groves, will appear in the next issue of Training News, due out before Christmas.
